Em's Space! - Article 1: The Nerdy Interview!

Welcome to Em’s Space! (technically its part of Pretty Nerdy, but I just wanted to steal some of it xD)

I’ll be updating this spot every fortnight with all sorts of new news, thoughts and opinions, so watch this space!

Quick introduction about Pretty Nerdy; it’s a company created by two nerds, myself and Nish, to appreciate, love and explore our creativity about all things nerdy! As much as we want to create merchandise about anime, manga and games, we also want to develop a community to talk about our thoughts and conspiracy theories – we are not hiring gatekeepers!

As two people who turned to anime and manga in trying times, we’ve really developed a love and appreciation for story lines, animation and visuals. So here’s a little interview, conducted by me, to get to know us!

What was your first anime?

EM: My first anime was Naruto! I actually ended up watching an episode on Disney XD in dubbed, and I was kinda hooked. At the time, there was only 150 episodes out and it was only once I had finished it did I know that there was a subbed; I’ve never been back to dub since. Ultimately, I came back to Naruto around four times because each time it was never finished and just stuck in filler hell!

NISH: For me, it was Dragon Ball Z when I was about 3 years old. I watched it whilst I was still in Portugal and living with my grandparents. It was Portuguese dubbed, but I remember seeing kid Gohan turn Super sayian, and was so amazed! I was a Gohan fan boy throughout my childhood to the point that I ended cosplaying Gohan at the age of 3 to carnival day at my nursery. Sadly as I grew up, I actually watched the full series and saw Gohan's disrespectful character development. After that I probably went back in to anime around my teens, with either Naruto or Death Note.

Do you have an anime that you keep coming back to?

EM: I think for me, I have three; Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia and Haikyuu. It probably was Naruto for a bit but I think that’s because I wanted to finish it. Ouran is just gooooooood vibes. Period.

I come back to this anime probably once a year, but its just filled with so many feel good scenes and seriously just cheers me up. My Hero Academia is just cute. Like super super super cuteeeeeeeeeee. Was I a Chisaki SIMP? Yes!! Because, if hot why evil? Just saying, Himeko Toga also comes under this, would I do anything she asked – yes (please bless me with your presence). Also, did we see Suneater, Tamaki Amajiki??!! I’m not someone who goes for younger guys but he’s the only exception! I have no words for Haikyuu, except if you haven’t seen it, go watch it! Its beautiful.

NISH: For me, its Death Note and Steins Gate. Wanna know why? The emotions, THE FEEEELLLSSSSSSSSSSSS. Did I cry after these anime? Very likely, but I’ll deny it if you ever ask me. I’m a huge DR WHO fan, so Steins Gate time travel craziness was right up my alley. And Death Note was a favourite because of all the messy mind games and not cause I'm a basic bitch and a massive L fan boy.

What anime are you looking forward to the most in 2022?

EM: hmmm, its got to be Rising of the Shield Hero season 2! There are some real gems coming out next year, but I think it's just cause I finished binge watching it and its just as incredible as I remember it. I was really disappointed to hear it got pushed back but honestly I don’t mind waiting right now. JJK is also on that list – the movie trailers have been looking so good. Attack on Titan part two is also another one that’s gonna be so awesome. Theres too many to count!

NISH: JJK is on that list for me, but right now its definitely JOJO season 6 – I’m so excited to see Jolene and Jotaro getting cussed out for being a shit dad. I did read half the manga and knew the adventures got more and more bizarre, however I stopped reading and just focused on the anime (sacrilege I know I’m sorry). The trailer for season six looked really good, and I think it’ll be the best season to date. When I watched JJK season one, I was hooked and I knew it was going to be a favourite going forward – I need to read the manga though, I keep getting spoilers for the Shibuya Arc on TikTok!

Surprise, It's me Dio.

From the Pretty Nerdy launch, which one is your favourite?

EM: Definitely the FLY HIGH beanie. I’m such a big haikyuu fan, I knew I wanted it to be part of our first launch. I was just talking to Nish about how I wanted a design with Hinata spiking, and he suddenly had inspo about combining it with the NBA logo! Fast forward a few hours later, there was this incredible design!

NISH: I think for me, it’s the JOJO Menacing beanie. It’s the most vibrant and colourful beanie we’ve released, but also, I just love the menacing symbols. Its just so iconic! However, I do have a massive soft spot for the SIMP x SIMP beanie because I’m just just a big ass simp in real life *sighs in simp*.
